Sweetpea Cottage is offering you a remarkable early piece of German woodcarving, possibly from the Black Forest. Beautifully executed, this chalice has survived the test of time and is as fresh today as when it was first created.

This one-of-a-kind chalice, or goblet, was carved from three pieces of linden or boxwood. The body of the vessel was turned on a lathe and then skillfully carved. The base was turned, carved and then attached to the body. The lid is a separate piece that was carefully turned and carved. It is hard to describe the beautiful, delicate nature of the organic carvings that surround this piece. A band of leaves and flowers encircles the upper part of the chalice. It is very delicate and certainly took much patience and skill to complete. The base and lid are beautifully designed and still show the subtle marks of the carver’s chisels. It has a religious feel to it, although there is no evidence that it had a religious purpose. The piece stand 7 3/4 inches high with the lid on and 6 7/8 inches high with the lid off. The diameter of the bowl is 4 ½ inches and the base is 3 3/4 inches wide. There is a matte finish on the wood and it shows the patina that wood slowly obtains with age. A thin layer of stain that was applied by the maker in order to enrich the color. The lid has a small drying crack that developed over the years. It has been repaired with filler that is colored to match the surrounding areas. This crack is the only damage. If you collect carved wood or Black Forest items, then you want this piece. It is one of a kind and most unusual. If you are looking to add a unique decorative element to your decor or desk, then this is it!
