Hand crafted in the woodworking shop at Sweetpea Cottage, this classic bent wood box is a unique item reflecting the simplicity of fine folk art, made in the traditional manner of the Norwegian tines, or tina. It can stand on its own as a piece of art, or it would make an excellent conversation piece, storage box for desk detritus, or jewelry box. For years now, the tines made at Sweetpea Cottage have been eagerly sought by discriminating collectors of fine artisan wood items.

Crafted like a piece of fine furniture, this is an elegantly styled bent wood box, with beautiful, graceful lines and rich color. This box has been entirely constructed with white birch emphasizing the beautiful grain and color of the wood. It has been steam bent and fastened together with the same tiny copper tacks that are used for constructing Shaker boxes. The birch has a rich golden glow that continues to improve with age. The corner posts are carved in a “heart” design that stands out proudly from the lid and keeps with the tradition of love associated with bride’s boxes. The lid snaps down tightly onto the corner posts, giving this type of box the nickname “snap box.” It is a beautiful interpretation of the traditional Norwegian, Swedish, or Scandinavian, tine.

The box is oval measuring about 6 inches long and 4 inches wide. It measures 8 3/4 inches from the outside ends of the two posts. The total height is 5 ½ inches, with the body of the box standing 3 1/4 inches tall. The wood has been treated with a Danish oil, then finished with several coats of a polyurethane/oil finish, and finally hand-rubbed with a high quality wax. The oil has helped to bring out the richness of the birch and the wood is developing the classic patina that is so sought after.
