From the woodworking shop at Sweetpea Cottage, we are offering this modern version of an antique salt box, or hanging wall box. Made like a piece of fine furniture, it is ready for you to use. Hang it on the wall, or place in on a desk. Use it to store all of your car keys, or rolls of loose stamps. The uses are endless for this handy little box.

Based on a design found in early salt boxes, this box has the classic inverted folk art heart handle for hanging and a hand carved heart lozenge sits on the lid. Underneath the box as an added bonus there is a small drawer. Both spaces are excellent for storing odds and ends. The maximum height is 7 1/’2 inches tall with the actual box being 4 5/8 inches tall. It is 6 1/4 inches wide and 5 3/8 inches deep. It is made entirely out of solid Pennsylvania curly cherry that was hand selected for its stunning grain pattern. Construction is all by hand with dovetails used at the corners and the lid hinged on cherry dowels. The only piece of metal on this box is the solid brass knob on the drawer. Even the heart lozenge on the lid was hand carved at Sweetpea Cottage. The box has been carefully finished with an oil/ varnish finish and will be allowed to naturally darken to the rich red-brown that makes cherry so desirable. Inside the box and drawer the bottoms are covered with anti-tarnish cloth (Pacific cloth) just in case you wish to keep your silver jewelry there. This salt box has many, many uses and is destined to become a family heirloom.
