Museum Quality Grain Painted Norwegian Storage Box, Ca. 1850

$1,125 USDMuseum Quality Grain Painted Norwegian Storage Box, Ca. 1850

Antiques:Primitives:Norwegian Grain Painted Document Box
Collectors of early Norwegian or Scandinavian antiques will love this box. This is what you would expect to see at the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum given its unique quality and character. It is, no doubt, a one of a kind item that collectors do not think they will ever have a chance to own. We obtained it directly from Norway. It is made from fir, and has diamond openings on all sides where the wood has been cut out and replaced with carved open grids inserted into the wood. The whole ...
Chip Carved Hanging Wall Box / Cabinet w/Bifold Door, Ca. 1900

$575 USDChip Carved Hanging Wall Box / Cabinet w/Bifold Door, Ca. 1900

Antiques:Primitives:Chip Carved Hanging Wall Box
We love it whenever we can offer you a fine American primitive piece. This is one of those very special items. It is a most unusual hanging wall box that has a chip carved inset panel on the door and chip carved moldings. Our best estimate is that it dates from the turn of the last century. The door is unusual in that it is hinged 2/3's of the way across the front so that when opened it partially reveals the shelved cabinet. The remaining third of the front is hinged on the side so that the door ...
SALE Mid-18th C. Walnut Document or Whiskey Box w/ Strap Hinges & Lock

$800 USD SaleSALE Mid-18th C. Walnut Document or Whiskey Box w/ Strap Hinges & Lock

Antiques:Primitives:Document Box
Sweetpea Cottage has obtained a truly outstanding early antique. We are offering you this spectacular walnut box that bears all of the pedigree of a country primitive from the mid-18th century. We are calling it a document box, but recent research suggests that it might have been used for shipping liquor or whiskey, given its heavy construction. It is large, measuring 19 ½ inches by 11 ½ inches by 9 inches. The four sides and lid of the box are made from solid walnut, all single boards. The ...
SALE Painted Sugar Bucket with Scoop & Pegged Lid

$355 USD SaleSALE Painted Sugar Bucket with Scoop & Pegged Lid

Antiques:Primitives:Painted Sugar Bucket
Sweetpea Cottage is offering a wonderful piece of primitive functional country art. This is a handmade painted bucket with a lid that is pegged in place. It has been decorated with a rich reddish-brown wash that looks to be original the piece. The bucket is constructed with staves that are held in place with an iron ring at the bottom and a split wood hoop at the top. There are indications that there were other hoops at one time but they have been replaced with the ones that you see here. The ...
Hanging Walnut Scouring Box, Ca 1840

$275 USDHanging Walnut Scouring Box, Ca 1840

Antiques:Primitives:Walnut Scouring Box
This is possibly one of the nicest primitives that we have ever handled at Sweetpea Cottage. Known as a scouring box, or silver polisher, it represents a lost piece of history. In its day, it would have been filled with fireplace ash. Silverwares were polished by rubbing them with the ash and using the sloped block of wood in the center to obtain a high shine. The box is made from solid walnut and assembled with square-cut nails and brads. There is a steam bent piece of walnut surrounding the ...
SOLD Mid-19th C. Classic Maple Cutlery Tray w/ Canted Sides

SOLDSOLD Mid-19th C. Classic Maple Cutlery Tray w/ Canted Sides

Antiques:Primitives:Cutlery Tray
Sweetpea Cottage has obtained a terrific mid-19th century cutlery tray, knife tray, or utility tray. This sweet little piece has all of the qualities you want in a primitive early American item. Made of rock maple with square nail construction it has darkened over time to a beautiful patina. The tray is still structurally solid and measures 13 inches long and 8 3/4 inches wide, across the top of the canted sides and ends. The sides measure about 2 1/4 inches tall from the base and the total ...
