CINER - Vintage 1940's Powder Compact - Rhinestone Cocktail Charms. Rare & Collectible. Book piece.

In addition to collecting designer signed vintage costume jewelry, i have also enjoyed collecting vintage compacts from the Art Deco era, 1930's, 40's and 50's. The most glamorous period for ladies vanity and accessory items.

There are several well known designers of the most beautiful costume jewelry that also created a small number of compacts that were also signed. These compacts are usually very hard to find and rare, especially in good condition.

One of the most famous jewelry manufacturers that created compacts is Ciner, this company was established in 1892 first creating fine jewelry and in the 1930's creating very high end costume jewelry sold in the finest Department Stores. Ciner is referred to as the Tiffany of Costume Jewelry because of their high quality and some designs are inspired by Tiffany jewelry.

The fine details they are most famous for can be seen in the beautiful rhinestone charms with enamel accents, raised on the lid of this exquisite loose powder compact dating to the 1940's. A compact like this can be seen in the Roselyn Gerson book Vintage and Vogue, Ladies Compacts, Ms. Gerson is also well known for her excellent book on highly collectible Estee Lauder Solid Perfume and powder compacts.

In addition to Ciner, some of the other famous names who designed compacts are Hobe, Eisenberg, Coro, Hattie Carnegie, Trifari and Original by Robert, all of these names created highly sought after costume jewelry and compacts too.

I have always been attracted to whimsical figural jewelry and compacts and this 2" square compact (3/8" high) gold tone compact is one of my long time treasures. It's a perfect size to slip inside a small evening bag. The charms shown are all cocktail theme related, a rhinestone ice bucket with 2 bottles of wine in yellow enamel, rhinestone corkscrew, rhinestone ice tongs holding one square rhinestone ice cube, rhinestone cocktail shaker and the center charm is a stem wine glass covered in rhinestones and red enamel.

The back of the gold tone compact is textured and has a plain rectangle in the center of the back that i imagine was intended to be monogrammed. I am sure any jeweler can engrave your initials to customize this most "charming" vintage compact.

The top powder door is clearly signed Ciner in block letters inside a rectangle. It does not appear to ever have been used, the puff is clean, unwashed, but has a wrinkle on the top, there is no screen or box, but does come inside a soft pouch to protect it. The powder compartment door and lid snap shut securely.
