Recently purchased at a local estate sale are what I believe are unmarked German Hertwig dolls from the late 1800s. The McKinley Act passed in 1890 required imported goods to be permanently marked with the country of origin. Therefore, if a doll head is impressed with the word Germany, it dates no earlier then 1891. In 1921 the Act was amended to require the addition of the words "made in", so any dolls impressed "Made In Germany" date after 1921. Similar dolls, to the painted all bisque dolls I have here, can be found in Mildred Seeley's The Complete Book Of All Bisque Dolls. Both of these have jointed arms at the shoulders, moulded blonde hair, clothing and blue painted flat strapped shoes. With beautifully moulded painted faces, making them look so life like, these would certainly be a great addition to your collection. So rare to find an identical pair in such great condition. From what I can tell, they're pretty much flawless. Each stand 4 inches tall. Each doll has a number or number combination under one arm (close to where an armpit would be). Its really hard to tell just what it is because its so small but here's what I think it appears to be so you be the judge. Looks like "1 1/2" to me. One has it under her right arm and the other under the left. Thanks for looking.
