The carving is 3 dimensional with the center sitting the highest and having the largest leaves and grapes.
The condition is fine with no chipping or damage to the ivory. The stem of the clasp to fasten the brooch is slightly bent, not noticeable when worn or even worth mentioning expect for the necessary disclosure. The color of the ivory itself has mellowed to a lovely glossy cream. Note that the 1st picture shows the color as more yellow than the soft cream that is the true color.
Dimensions are 2" high and 1 3/8" wide. Weight is 18.6 grams.
This wonderful item traveled from England across the water to Canada in the 20's.
I am in possession of an appraisal for insurance dated Nov. 1983, at which time the value for collectors was set at $375.00. As ivory is no longer allowed to be imported due to the possible extinction of the elephant killed for their tusks only, the value has only increased. This, coupled with the 25+ years that have passed since being appraised, has set my asking price.
Please email if you wish to view the appraisal to help you with your decision. I'll email it to you directly. The hard copy of the appraisal will be included with your purchase.
