SOLD Victorian Bog Oak Hand Brooch - circa 1870
Bog oak mourning brooch from the mid Victorian era. It is 2 3/4" x 1 1/4", a carved ladies hand holding a wreath of flowers. The detail on the lace cuff and the carving of the flowers is wonderful. The brooch as a c-clasp and the pin base is screwed into the wood. There is slight wear at the edges, and it looks like a small portion of the lower sleeve cuff appears to have been damaged at one time, but condition is very good for this antique brooch.
In Victorian times, a ladies hand was often a symbol of friendship, and the wreath a symbol or mourning or remembrance,
