Large Art Nouveau Black Cameo Brooch

An arresting vintage brooch from the early 1900's, with a combination of Celtic and Art Nouveau influence. The centerpiece is a bezel-set black glass cameo, 1 5/8" x 1 1/4. The classical profile is raised and has a matte finish, while the background is shiny glass.

The entire brooch is 2 3/4" x 2 1/8", with a brass setting that combines cast and hand wrought elements. The design is somewhat like a Celtic cross, and the inlaid glass "agates" are reminiscent of Victorian Scottish jewelry.

This is a heavy piece, to be worn on a coat or wool cape, perhaps. It could be displayed on a little easel, a striking piece of jeweler's art.

This brooch dates from about 1920, most likely European made, and is in excellent vintage condition. There are no damages, but there are minor signs of wear on the reverse.
