Blue Victorian Bristol Glass Vase with Pine Cones & Insect

This is one of my very favorite pieces. The hand-blown Victorian Bristol glass vase is decorated with hand-painted enamel pine cones. A wasp-like insect flies in their midst. The decoration is atypical, reflecting the Victorian interest in things Japanese. The rim is gilded. c, 1880

Victorian Art Glass pieces are little works of art. The glass here is highlighted by motifs from the natural world. Flowers, leaves and insects were favored subjects for art of all types. Many of these pieces are BRISTOL GLASS. An elderly antiques dealer once defined Bristol as having an orange fire when held to the light. Today, many types of hand-blown Victorian glass are categorized as Bristol.
