We want you to feel the same warmth and caring as if you were in our home enjoying coffee and talking antiques!
This is a fabulous and very early mourning pin from the Victorian era. The pin is made of gutta percha and is exquisite. Gutta percha is made of a mixture of resins from the sap of Malaysian trees. It was used in making jewelry among other items beginning in the 1840's. Very few gutta percha has survived the years, as it was unstable in the air. It is molded rather than carved.
This particular beauty is quite extravagant. Measuring quite a bit more than the very few other gutta percha items out there from the 1800's. This one measures 2 1/2" by 1 3/4". Also it sits about one inch when measuring from front to back. The pin is comprised of three layers, with the first being the smooth rectangular bottom with angled corners. The second layer is the oval plaque in which the third and final layer sits upon. The third is just so exquisite! Molded plumes of leaves and foliage appear in the background, while two very detailed birds sit face to face. The one of the left is a male and the one on the right is a female. Two lovebirds. Just a beautiful piece of jewelry that has survived many, many years.
The condition is very good! There are no issues at all. The reverse of the pin is a typical early clasp of that time period. 12K gold filled solder is used on the catch. The original half frame that was evident on so many of these fine beauties are also still present.
This truly is a work of art. The detail is amazing. We were quite taken with this piece when it arrived at our shop. Much more elaborate than what has typically survived. A true beauty and a rare find!
