Beautiful Porcelain ~ Flexible Layaways!
It is believed that even before the 1848 advertised auction of the entire estate of Mr. C.J. Mason—Francis Morley, a large scale manufacturer of stone china, purchased the Mason’s copper plates and molds as well as the right to produce Mason’s designs, shapes, and marks. Francis Morley & Co. was succeeded by Morley & Ashworth (circa 1859-1861), and then by G.L. Ashworth & Bros.
An example of a similar tureen, manufactured by Ashworth at a later date, is shown on page 41 of Geoffrey A. Godden’s Guide to Ironstone, Stone & Granite Wares.
The tureen bears an English diamond mark with a “Y” at the top of the diamond, indicating a manufacture date of 1853. The diamond is encircled by a round device marked “F. Morley & Co.” with the blue printed numbers “4404” indicating the pattern number (Replacements Ltd. has listed this pattern as “Scutari”).
Measurements are: 7 ˝ inches high to the top of the finial; and 12 inches across from handle to handle.
Condition is very good to excellent, with some light crazing.
Item ID: 605
