Here is a great Pickard China charger depicting a magnificent peacock displaying his beautiful flowing train of iridescent blue-green colored plumage, with a lovely walled garden scene in the background. An All-Over-Gold band in the “Rose and Daisy” pattern encircles this enchanting scene.

This lovely work of art has been executed and signed by renowned Pickard artist Edward S. Challinor, on a Bavarian blank. Edward S. Challinor, born in England in 1877, was a descendant of a family of Staffordshire potters. His grandfather, Edward, established his firm in Staffordshire under the name "E. Challinor & Co.", and the above operated until 1896. It is believed that Challinor visited his family’s pottery several times during his youth, and that he began an apprenticeship there at age seventeen. He may also have served an apprenticeship at the Royal Doulton Potteries in Burslem, England.

Challinor emigrated to the U.S. in 1903. He briefly worked for Willets Manufacturing Company, and his one known work of art from that time is a vase with a peacock design similar to the later peacock designs he would create for Pickard. By late 1903, Challinor had moved to Chicago and was working for Pickard Studios.

Pickard pieces with the Challinor signature are considered among the very best and represent an excellent art investment.

Charger bears Pickard Mark 9 (Circa 1919-1922) and is 12-1/8 inches in diameter. Condition is very good to excellent, slightest wear.
