An exceptional pair of English paintings on tin produced in 1801. The first depicts John O'Gaunt Gateway at Lancaster Castle; the second depicts Lune Aqueduct on Lancaster Canal, an engineering feat of John Rennie completed in 1797. Interestingly, the castle reappears in the canal painting, (appearing at left under the archway) forging a thematic link. The pair are are unsigned but clearly executed by the same hand. Each panel measures 13 x 18 inches. The actual images measure 11 x 16 inches. They show some paint shrinkage in the shadowed areas (see detail). Contemporary frames with black velvet liner furnished by Gate House framemakers of Fairfield, Wyckoff and Pompton Lakes. Panel #1, Lancaster Castle: condition is very good with one erratic scratch (restored and visible only in flash photo). Dated 1801 in flag on weather vane. Severe paint shrinkage at bottom left appearing as black spot, but no paint loss. Panel #2, Lune Aqueduct. Condition is good with recent scratches which are apparent in photo. These will require minor restoration. No paint loss. Very exacting execution and amazing detail with Lancaster depicted in distance. Reads "Aqueduct Near Lancaster" bottom center, just to the right of fisherman figure. Especially lovely in this pair are the soft tonal qualities of the light in sky and water.
