A terrific nude by American abstract expressionist, Reuben Nakian (1897-1986). Beginning his career as a sculptor, Nakian associated with the other AE's becoming friends with Arshile Gorky and Willem DeKooning. As his career progressed, he began to focus on erotic abstraction of the female figure, frequently inspired by the mythologies of ancient Greece, reinterpreted for the 20th century. This dynamic composition is his version of "Europa and the Bull". Nakian had his first major retrospective at the LA County Museum in 1962, soon followed by a major exhibition currated by Frank O'Hara at MoMA in 1966. Ink on paper, measures 12 x 18 inches, 25 x 30 inches framed. Paper is mounted "floating" with all pH-neutral archival materials. Signed in pencil lower left.
