Amethysts were quite popular in Roman jewelry. They were associated in gemstone folklore with truth and clear vision. Both the Greeks and Romans believed that wearing amethysts during a banquet prevented the wearer from being drunk (amethyst literally means "without drunkenness" in Greek). According to Roman historians, this rarely worked.....
These earrings feature very classical-looking 22 kt. sterling vermeil chandeliers, set with a cabochon (smooth) inlay of oval amethyst,, with the loops used in many Roman earrings. I've accented with gorgeous 8mm. 'onion-cut' amethyst briolettes, full-round and faceted. The smaller amethysts are 4mm. faceted rounds, accented with 2mm. 14kt. gold-fill beads, and sterling vermeil granulated beads.
They hang from sterling vermeil posts, also accented with granulated beads, which were widely used in Roman jewelry. Granulated goldwork was a specialty of the ancient Etruscans who preceded the Romans in Italy, and their style of finely beaded goldwork was central to Roman jewelry. They measure 2 & 1/8" long with the beaded posts.
I am very proud of these lovely Roman reproduction earrings. The style continued to be popular well into the Medieval period, and was revived during the Renaissance, with its passion for all things classical.
These would retail in a good Museum or historical jewelry reproduction catalog for about $150.
All metals are 22kt. sterling vermeil or 14kt. gold-filled. The amethysts are genuine.
