Amethysts were quite popular in Roman jewelry. They were associated in gemstone folklore with truth and clear vision. Both the Greeks and Romans believed that wearing amethysts during a banquet prevented the wearer from being drunk (amethyst literally means "without drunkenness" in Greek). According to Roman historians, this rarely worked.....
These earrings feature very classical-looking 24 kt. sterling vermeil triangular rope-edged pendants, with the loops used in many Roman earrings. They are accented with granulated 24kt. vermeil beads, also widely used in Roman jewelry. Granulated goldwork was a specialty of the ancient Etruscans who preceded the Romans in Italy, and their style of finely beaded goldwork was central to Roman jewelry.
The bottom amethyst briolettes are really lovely! They are 7 and 8mm. faceted "onion" cut, meaning that they are full-round with depth and texture. They hang from my handmade French hook wires, accented with the same granulated vermeil beads and 4mm. faceted amethyst rounds. They measure 2 & 3/8" long with the beaded wires, and 1.75" long, not including the earwires. They include rubber stoppers for extra security.
I am very proud of these lovely Roman reproduction earrings. The style continued to be popular well into the Medieval period, and was revived during the Renaissance, with its passion for all things classical.
These would retail in a good Museum or historical jewelry reproduction catalog for about $120.
All metals are 24kt. sterling vermeil or 14kt. gold-filled. The amethysts are genuine.
