The style is early Medieval, with its clear late Roman influence. A Queen of Tara during the early centuries of the Middle Ages might have worn a pair of magnificent earrings much like these.
The color is deep purple to suggest royalty, in faceted 12 X 8 mm. briolettes. The earrings are a classic Medieval style, with a modern twist: I've used teardrop briolettes of hydrothermal quartz, in a luscious deep clear purple color. These cultured quartz briolettes are convex at the back with fine faceting and detailing, so when seen from the front they have a depth and brilliance that is hard to match. I love using hydrothermal quartz in my Medieval reproduction jewelry because the richness of its color is so close to the jewel-tones of Medieval stained glass. Purple was one of the most beloved colors of Medieval clothing and jewelry.
They hang from a vermeil pendant of the classic equal-armed cross that was sacred to the ancient Druids of Ireland, and later to Christian Medieval knights. They hang from beaded 24kt. sterling vermeil earwires. They measure 2 & 1/8" with the wires, 1 & 3/8" without. The jewelry wires and round beads are 14kt. gold-filled, and the earwires, filigree beadcaps and Medieval cross charm are 24kt. sterling vermeil.
Hydrothermal quartz is a lab-grown quartz, not naturally occurring. I do not normally use synthetic quartz in my jewelry, but the rich color of these was too luscious to resist!
Wear them with a simple long dress and feel like a Medieval Queen of Tara!
All metals are 14kt. gold-filled, or sterling vermeil, as noted.
