This late 19th century pair of white kid gloves measure 13 1/2" in length, or just below the elbow. They are in very good condition with tight solid seams and no damage to the leather except for some minor soiling. There is no damage to the floral beaded decoration. They are marked on the inside size 6 1/4 and "Made in France". One of the gloves has a partially legible stamp inside with shows they were made in Grenoble, France. The McKinley tariff act of 1891 required all goods for export have the name of their origin in English. The staple industry of Grenoble, France was once the manufacture of kid gloves. Glove sizes were standardized in 1834 by Xavier Jouvin of Grenoble, France who perfected the cutting die for gloves. Gloves made from the skins of young goats or "kids" are still regarded as the best in fashion. They are famous for their softness and comfort to wear. Thus came the expression "treated with kid gloves".
