This red vasculum with a gnome or elf pictured on the front pulling his dog pull-toy measures 4 1/2" in height, 5 3/4" in width and 3" deep. A vasculum is a container, usually of tin, used by botanists and school children to collect field samples. A moistened cloth lining the interior kept the samples viable by maintaining a cool humid environment. Their shape allowed the containers to be carried horizontally on a strap so the specimens lie flat. This piece is in very good condition with a few minor shallow dents, no breaks in the metal but some paint wear and scratches. The size and the decoration on this tin suggests it was most likely intended for a child. It is not marked by the manufacturer but probably has German origins. The latch is in good working order. While intended for botanical samples, today they are often seen used as lunch boxes and purses.
