Wendell Sterling Silver Tea Spout Strainer

This type of tea strainer was intended to hang under the teapot spout to catch the leaves. They probably got little if any use. They weren't very practical since they would allow drips of tea to fall on the tablecloth. The mark on the side, just below the outside rim appears to be the mark of Wendell Manufacturing Company, below that "STERLING" and with a catalog number of "820". They made sterling wares from 1850 to about 1900 in Chicago. A retail or wholesale outlet was listed in New York for Wendell & Co. from 1904-1909. This tea strainer is in very good condition and measures approx. 2 3/8" in diameter.
