This all-bisque doll measures 5 1/8" in height. There is no makers mark on this doll, but he does have a small incised "6" on the inside of both arms. He looks very similar to an example pictured on pg. 130 of Nippon Dolls & Playthings by Joan F Van Patten & Linda Lau. Since he is not marked, we cannot conclude he is a Nippon era doll. His bisque is very nice, much like that used on Kewpie dolls. It is well established that after the kewpie doll came out on the market, many companies in Japan and Germany tried to tap into the market by producing similar types of dolls. He has very nice painted facial features and hair which are kiln fired onto the doll. The side glancing eyes and two teeth in an open mouth are very well done. His fingers and toes are well defined. Another clue he is of Japanese origins is the flesh tone on his arms is not exactly the same as his body. Arms and legs on Japanese dolls were produced and painted separately from the body of the doll and assembled later, often resulting in flesh tones which don't match. He is in excellent condition, we can find no flaws. He has a cute molded curl on top of his head.
