This squirrel with nut figurine measures 5 1/4" in height. He is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. He has no makers mark but was made by the Ontario, Canada firm Blue Mountain Pottery. His distinctive flow-green glaze was derived from the artisan's attempt to portray the colors which appear on the face of the Blue Mountain during the spring and summer. The mountain is heavily laden with spruce and pine trees interlaced with the dark clearing of winter ski runs. They achieved their trademark streaky effect by dipping each piece of rich red clay pottery into two different kinds of liquid glazes which covered tiny pores in the clay. The high temperature used in the firing process allowed the glazes to flow freely together producing the mirror like glass. The finish on each piece is unique. this piece was designed by Dennis Tupy in the 1960's. Blue Mountain Pottery was Canada's largest manufacturer of quality gift-ware pottery from 1947 until its closure in December of 2004.
