About Us
Creating jewellery combines two of my passions - my love of beading and my fascination with gemstones.
My beaded creations are made primarily from gemstones and precious metals, including the extraordinary medium of metal clay (PMC & Art Clay). I mostly string and weave with silk thread, for its purity, strength and incomparable drape. I frequently combine gemstones and metals with fine textiles such as lace, silk, velvet, leather and suede. You will find this most evident in my range of textile chokers.
All gemstones and metals are cleansed prior to beginning work and on completion of each piece. Energetically speaking, you receive the jewellery as a blank slate. If you would like to know more about the process I use, or the properties of gemstones used in a particular piece, you are more than welcome to ask.
My inspirations are as fleeting and varied as the seasons, as I never know where the next creative spark will come from. Nature, colour and the raw materials I use often bring that spark to the fore, as does experimentation and the ongoing study of the jewellery craft.
My influences are drawn mostly from our vast creative histories - the Renaissance, Rococo and Art Nouveau, the ethnic crafts of Northern Africa, the Americas and Asia and the abstract visions of Art Masters Kandinsky, Klimt and Gaudi.
BIO
I was born and raised in London, to parents of very diverse racial and cultural backgrounds. Growing up in Chelsea, London's fashion district, I saw the likes of punk (70's) and pearls (80's) come and go. From an early age, I have been aware of people's need to express their own identity through clothing and accessories.
My passion for beading and making jewellery began at the tender age of six, when I would spend many hours stringing necklaces and making earrings for myself and my family. Over the years I have learned many different beading techniques. While studying fashion, I specialised in the application of beads to fabric and the exploration of jewelled apparel.
Later studies in multimedia technology (BSc) seemed initially a great departure from my craft background, but in recent years I have found these studies have provided me with a thorough grounding in colour theory, design technique and practical use of Internet technologies.
Frequent travelling brought me to Australia during my 20's and within weeks of arriving, I knew I had found my home. Some years later I returned permanently and now live in Sydney, Australia, with my husband Gary and our zesty four year old son, Rio.
