Romain de Tirtoff was known professionally as Erte, the French pronunciation of his initials "R.T." Born in St. Petersburg, Russia to a distinguished family that traced its lineage to 1548, he moved to Paris in 1912 to become a fashion illustrator. He was a contributor to Harper's Bazaar for 22 years where he produced more than 250 covers, but is best remembered for the incredibly beautiful and creative Art Deco costumes and stage sets he designed for the Folies-Bergere in Paris and George White's Scandals in New York.

Erte had a period of relative quiet during and just after World War II, but experienced a stunning renaissance beginning in 1967 after meeting a London art dealer who staged exhibitions of Erte's gouache paintings and drawings in New York and London. It was at the exhibition at the Grosvenor Gallery in New York that this painting was purchased. It has been in the hands of the same owner since that time.

Erte's most sought-after work is from his earliest period. "La Colere", dated 1925, is gouache and metallic paint on paper measuring 11 1/4" x 15". Framed dimensions are 18 3/4" x 24 1/2". Authentication: original bill of sale from Grosvenor Gallery, New York City, dated 6/17/67.

Erte died in 1990 at the age of 97.
