Please Peruse Our Profferings Of Primarily Paper Pieces Of The Past - Vintage Ads, Postcards, Prints, Cards, Sheet Music, etc
This dated, antique Brooke's Soap ad features an illustration of a human-scaled monkey dressed as a court jester in a harlequin-style top and hat with bells. The playful, anthropomorphic primate is skating across a frozen pond while pushing a giant frying pan equipped with sleigh runners. Through the handle hole of the pan is a pole with a banner bearing the inscription, "A Happy New Year Everyone". In the frying pan is a giant example of a box of the advertised household cleaning product - a nice depiction of Victorian packaging and 'branding'.
The late 19th-Century, illustrated picture is an engraving of a winter countryside scene. The ape-like, smiling, simian skater is gliding on the ice in old-fashioned strap-on, curled-toe skates with snow-covered hills and a English country church in the background.
This is one of a long-running series of Victorian advertisements for Brooke's Monkey Brand Soap that featured a monkey in various guises. It was portrayed performing a number of human-like activities.
Many vintage ads can act as "time capsules", reflecting the styles and sensibilities of a particular era. Christmas ads, perhaps due to the traditional, "family" nature of the holiday, often evoke a stronger sense of nostalgia. They can stir childhood memories of simpler, more sentimental times.
This Extra-LARGE 1890s advert measures 11 3/4" x 16 1/4" (approx.). The image of this piece of advertising memorabilia / ephemera has been accommodated completely by a large-format scanner. This Victorian-era British print ad is in excellent condition and is eminently suitable for framing - perhaps as a decorative holiday accent for your home.
