John, Baron Somers of Evesham (1651-1716) was an English jurist and statesman. He presided over the framing of the Bill of Rights in 1689. He subsequently held the offices of Solicitor-General, Attorney-General, Lord Keeper Of The Seal, and Lord Chancellor. He was forced to resign as Lord Chancellor in part for his support of the infamous pirate, Captain Kidd. He served as President of The Royal Society (1698-1703) and was succeeded by the illustrious Sir Isaac Newton. A friend of such writers as Jonathan Swift and Joseph Locke his valuable collection of papers & manuscripts was edited by Sir Walter Scott. Bermuda was once known as "Somers Island" after an ancestor was ship-wrecked there.

This genuine antique portrait print shows this esteemed gentleman holding what appears to be a beautifully-bound volume bearing the Royal Coat-of-Arms. There is a Gothic-style decorated border incorporating his family crest making this 19th Century print eminently suitable for framing.

It is from an engraving by W.T. Mote from the original by Kneller in the collection of the Earl of Hardwicke. It measures 10 1/4" x 7" with the image area (including decorative border) measuring 7" x 6". The only minor flaws are a slight crease, a missing corner, and two 1/2" closed tears which would be covered by the matting.

It was published circa 1850 by The London Printing and Publishing Company.

Canada/USA Postage & Packing is $4.00 (elsewhere to be determined). Multiple items purchased from SHARP OBJECTS may be combined for shipping purposes.
