Frances Howard (1578-1639), Duchess of Richmond and Lennox was the patroness of Captain John Smith. He is one of the famous figures in early Colonial American history. He was involved with the Virginia & Plymouth Companies and was the man who named New England. He also, of course, was part of the story of the Indian Princess, Pocahontas.

The Duchess' third husband, Ludovick Stuart, Second Duke of Lennox, was next in line to the Scottish throne after James VI (James I of England).

This genuine antique portrait depicts the Duchess in all her 17th century finery. Strings of pearls festoon her bosom and decorate her decolletage. She is wearing a beautiful lace ruffed collar. Below her heart a portrait miniature heart-shaped brooch is visible. It appears to be a young man - her late husband or a son, perhaps?

This early 19th century print measures 10 3/4" x 7 1/4" with the image area at 5" x 4". There is minimal foxing & age-toning with a pronounced plate impression adding to its authenticity. This antique portrait of this attractive aristocratic lady is eminently suitable for framing.

It is from an engraving by P. Lightfoot from the original by Van Dyck "in the collection of The Most Noble The Marquis Of Bath". It was published April, 1st 1834 by Harding & Lepard, Pall Mall, East, London.

Canada/USA Postage & Packing is $4.00 (Elsewhere to be determined). Multiple items purchased from SHARP OBJECTS may be combined for shipping purposes.
