He was also known as "The Proud Duke" because of his arrogance. He "would never suffer his children to sit in his presence, and would never speak to his servants except by signs". One daughter dared to sit in the room while she thought he was dozing and was penalised for it in his will!
He married Baroness Percy in 1682 and in the 1690s used her vast fortune to rebuild Petworth House in Sussex to as we see it today. A great house has been there since 1309 but his creation was subsequently landscaped by Capability Brown and immortalised in a series of paintings by J.M.W. Turner. One of Henry XVIII's six wives, Jane Seymour, was from this family.
This genuine antique portrait depicts the Duke in his full 18th century robes & regalia. It is an engraving by William Holl from the original by Kneller in the collection of the Earl of Egremont. It was published in London on 1st October, 1835 by Harding & Lepard of Pall Mall, East.
This very impressive-looking print has a pronounced plate impression with minimal edge wear, age-toning, and a few spots to add to its authenticity. These expected blemishes would be covered by matting once framed.
It measures 11" x 7 1/2" while the image area is 5" x 4".
