A pretty English country scene of a beautiful 'village maiden' sitting on a stile while the adoring aristocrat leans on a fence gazing at her. Tennyson based his ballad on the true story of the First Marquess of Exeter and his second wife. He was an amateur artist who wandered and painted the countryside around the family seat of Burghley House near Stamford, Lincolnshire. He fell in love with a young, local girl and married her making her a countess. After having three children she tragically died at the tender age of twenty-four.
This colour plate is from a disbound, children's illustrated story book, "Children's Stories From Tennyson", by Nora Chesson which was published circa 1914 by Raphael Tuck & Sons, Ltd.. It is printed on glossy paper and is blank on the reverse. The colours of this charming, antique print are rich and vibrant.
This vintage litho print measures 9 1/2" x 7" (approx.) including margins. It is in very good condition with little of the attendant signs of age and wear and is eminently suitable for framing. It would be perfect in a boudoir, dressing area or on a vanity!
