Superb Vintage French Art Pottery Lancelle Maurel Figural Donkey & Flower Cart

I fell in love with this the moment I saw it—he’s adorable! This is a hand-made figure of a donkey pulling a flower cart. The donkey is glazed in gorgeous mottled shades of gray and brown with bright pink ears and nose, and blue eyes. The cart wheel is glazed in cream and green accented with black, while the figural flowers and foliage on top are done in mottled shades of green and yellow gold accented with blue, purple, pink, and yellow flowers. He measures approximately 6 ½” long, 4 ½” tall, and 4” from front to back. He is signed on the bottom, Lancelle M., Made in France. I have not been able to learn anything about the artist Lancelle Maurel except for his (her?) name. I would guess that the artist is a member of the Maurel family of ceramicists that were prominent in Vallauris beginning in the 1830’s with the arrival of the Maurel brothers and continuing through the 1950’s with Rene Maurel. This likely dates to the 50’s. It is in perfect condition with no chips, cracks, hairlines, repairs, etc. Shipping weight: 2 lb. 12 oz. (Location: C4)
