SOLD Stunning Antique French Majolica Art Nouveau Applied Flower Garnissage Serpent Handled Jardiniere
What a treat I have for you here! This stunning antique French majolica jardinière dates to between 1890 and 1914, and it is so very Art Nouveau with its naturalistic flowers, clean confectionery-like colors and gentle, fluid lines. The main body of the jardinière is glazed in an ombre aqua that shades to dark green, then to warm chocolate brown at the base. The wide band around the deeply scalloped top is glazed in shades of green and pink. Chocolate brown handles in the shape of a stylized serpent (I think!) flank the sides. The interior is glazed in turquoise and cream. The front has a lavish garland of applied flowers and leaves glazed in shades of rose, blue, violet and green. This technique is known as garnissage and was a favorite in France at the turn of the century. The jardinière measures 12” long, 4 ½” wide, and 8 ½” tall. It has no maker’s mark on the base, only the raised number 30, but it is most definitely French, probably from one of the many faienceries in the north along the Belgian border. This is in superb condition with no chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. There is gentle crazing appropriate to its age, but it is not at all disfiguring. Shipping weight: 5 lb. 6 oz. (Location: A5)
