I am very proud to offer this exquisite piece of French art pottery. It likely was made in Vallauris in the south of France. At the turn of the century Vallauris was something of a Mecca for artists in general, and ceramicists in particular. This bears a great deal of resemblance to known pieces by Delphin Massier, but it is not marked nor could I find it in any Massier catalog I consulted, so I am hesitant to attribute it to him. But it is certainly safe to say it was likely inspired by the work of one of the Massier family. this is a gracefully curved jardiniere, or cache pot (whichever term you prefer), glazed in a stunning deep peacock blue with the top rim cut and folded over onto itself in the shape of large veined petals glazed in cream and rose. The interior is glazed in solid cream. This dates to sometime between 1890 and 1910, most likely right around 1900. It is so quintessentially Art Nouveau--it could nearly stand as a definition of the era and the style. This gorgeous jardinière is 8” tall and 9 ½” in diameter, excluding the petals which extend out from the body of the jardinière forming stylized handles. This is in superb condition with no chips, cracks, hairlines, or repairs. There is an insignificant gouge to the table ring where the pot is in direct contact with the table, but this is visible only when turned upside down. There is gentle crazing appropriate to its age with some mild discoloration to the crazing of the interior (looks like water marks). This jardiniere bears the impressed number 1580 (I think, it’s difficult to make out.), but no other identifying marks. Shipping weight: 8 lb. 4 oz. (Location: FD)
