This is one of Sarreguemines most popular patterns and they made, and exported, a great deal of them. It was so popular in fact that many other makers copied them, so the collector must examine the plates closely to be certain they are Sarreguemines, and that they are older. One of the companies that imported these into the United States was Mitteldorfer Straus, who contracted with some of the most well-known potteries throughout Europe from the late 1890’s to the 1930’s and marketed them here under the name Peasant Village, hence the PV mark. In France, they were known to contract with both Sarreguemines and Gien for majolica in the 20’s & 30’s. In both cases, the wares carry only the Mitteldorfer Straus PV mark; not the maker’s mark. This example is their cherry plate. It measures 7 7/8” in diameter and is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, hairlines, or repairs. Shipping weight: 1 lb. 14 oz. (Location: OC)
