This stunning gourd-shaped vase was designed by the renowned artist, Charles Catteau, and made by Boch Freres Keramis of La Louvière, Belgium. This is one of a pair, please see my item #RL050820 for its mate! Charles Catteau became the art director of Boch Freres Keramis in 1906, where he remained until his retirement in 1948. Prior to World War One, his work was typically Art Nouveau, but after the war, he began to experiment with the stylized forms and brilliant glazes for which he would become justly famous. He was awarded his first gold medal for his designs in 1910 and went on to win several others in later years. This vase is glazed in brilliant yellow with linear accents of black and white. A central panel features stylized Art Deco flowers glazed in bright rose, tangerine, and lime green, all accented with black. It measures 8 ¾” tall and 4 ½” in diameter, and it dates to the 1920’s. The base is clearly marked with the number D876 and the “Boch Freres, La Louviere” black underglaze backstamp, as well as the underglaze initials of CT, which was one of Charles Catteau’s signature marks. It’s condition is superb with no chips, cracks, hairlines, etc. There is a small glaze skip or flake on the rim but it is pretty insignificant. Shipping weight: 2 lb. 14 oz. (Location: E2)
