I am very pleased to offer this gorgeous—and unusual—pitcher made by the renowned French faiencerie, Sarreguemines, (a.k.a Utzschneider et Cie) of Sarreguemines, France. Sarreguemines, a well-known pottery in the Northeast of France near the Belgian border, was a well-established pottery in operation since 1778, when they added majolica to their production line in the early 1860’s. The quality of their products put them into direct competition with the classic English manufacturers such as Minton and Wedgwood. This piece rather surprised me when I picked it up and examined the bottom for its mark, finding a much earlier mark (1904) than I expected, given the somewhat Art Deco look of the piece. The pitcher measures 5 ¾” tall and is glazed in an ombre-tone of rich yellow that deepens to a dark caramel at the base; an abstract curvilinear design decorates the pinched free-form body of the pitcher. It is clearly marked with the impressed Sarreguemines mark in use from 1889 until 1922. Further narrowing the date, it bears the Sarreguemines numeric code indicating this was made in March of 1904. It also bears the impressed numbers 3855 and 2074 (mold numbers) and 227, which is the Sarreguemines internal numeric code for majolica. The pitcher is in superb condition with no chips, cracks, hairlines, or repairs. Shipping weight: 2 lb. 8 oz. (Location: C3)
