Here is your opportunity to own this fantastic character jug known by collectors as the Scotsman. I honestly don’t understand the name—he doesn’t look at all Scottish to me. These were popular during the late 19th to early 20th century. Though this particular jug is most often referred to as Sarreguemines, it is more accurate to refer to them as Sarreguemines-type. They were produced near Sarreguemines, France to compete with the products of the renowned faiencerie of the same name. The Sarreguemines character pitchers have mold numbers no higher than the 5000’s, while these particular pitchers carry the numbers in the 7880 and 90 series, as well as a few into the 8000's. This specific pitcher is a model number 7889. It is also marked with the impressed number 28. It measures 5 ½” tall and approximately 4” in diameter. For more information on these Sarreguemines competitors, please see the book Majolica Figures by Helen Cunningham, where you’ll see this specific pitcher in several sizes on page 89. I have included a photo of the page below for those who don’t have access to the book. He is in superb condition with no chips, cracks, hairlines, or repairs. There is a small glaze rub on his ear, a glaze flake on the underside of his eyelid, and gentle crazing appropriate to his age, but it is not at all disfiguring. See the photos below for details. Shipping weight: 3 lb. 2 oz. (Location: LC)
