This is undoubtedly one of the most stunning pieces I’ve had the pleasure to own. It was made at the turn of the century by the renowned French artist Delphin Massier. The Massier family of Vallauris, France, is world famous for their high-quality art pottery and majolica produced first by the father, Jacques (1806-1871), whose sons Delphin, Clement, and Jérôme followed in his footsteps. This massive jardinière is 14 ½” in diameter and stands 10 ½” tall. The body is a rich, deep rose with large sprays of irises painted on either side in gorgeous shades of yellow, gold, lavender, and green. These irises are not relief-molded, but hand-painted onto the body of the jardinière. The piece is clearly marked on the bottom D.M. Cie (Delphin Massier), Vallauris, the letter A (the M is missing as a drainage hole has been drilled in the bottom) as well as the number 50, and the initials S.F. The painting is signed with what looks like Geffee or Geppee or ???. If you know this signature, please contact me as I would love to know who painted it. The condition is excellent with its only problems being the drainage hole, a tight hairline with 2 small chips associated with it, and another smaller hairline with a minor repair. See the photos below for details. I'm happy to provide additional photos, just drop me a note and I'll email them to you. Shipping weight: 16 lb. 12 oz. (Location: LD)
