Exquisite Antique French Majolica Orchies Triple-welled Asparagus Plate
Antiques : Ceramics, Porcelain : Majolica : French
Oh my, what a stunning treat this is! This Louis XV style asparagus dish has three wells, 2 for the vegetables and one for the sauce. It is glazed in shades of caramel, pale aqua, purple, and Prussian blue. It measures 10” in diameter and stands 1 ¼” tall. This is an early example of the stunning work of Orchies, near Lille, and dates to the late 1880’s. It is in superb condition with no chips, cracks, hairlines, repairs, etc. There is one tiny fleabite on the raised portion separating the two largest wells and gentle crazing appropriate to its age, but it is not at all disfiguring. This bears only the impressed number 23, but the dish is identified as Orchies in the reference book, Artichauts et Asperges en Barbotine (Pg. 100), by Maryse Bottero. I have included a photo of the page for those who don’t have access to the reference book. If you are interested in this plate in a different color scheme, see my item number RL050801, which is an identical plate in pink, brown, & aqua. Shipping weight: 3 lb. 6 oz. (Location: MB1)
