Do you see an item you just can't live without? I'd be purrrrfectly happy to consider your offer!!
Published in Boston by Lee & Shepard in 1879, this children's book is a real find! Written by William Taylor Adams under the pseudonym of Oliver Optic, this is the story of Flora Lee's birthday celebration. Several black-and-white illustrations are scattered throughout Lora Lee's story.
Adams, writing as Oliver Optic, was a prolific writer, born and raised in Massachusetts. He taught in the Boston Public Schools for many years before turning to writing full-time in 1865.
"Birth-Day Party" is one of twelve volumes from the Riverdale Stories. Other titles in this series include "Little Merchant", "Robinson Crusoe, Jr." and "The Do-Somethings". Other series written by Optic include "The Army and Navy Series", "The Starry Flag Series", "The Yacht Club Series" and "The Boat Club Stories".
Oliver Optic's books were well received in their day, mixing morals with plenty of adventure. Most of the characters in his books were modeled after Adams' many students taught over several decades.
This copy is in good to very good condition. Although the front cover is beginning to pull away, all pages are firmly attached and free from tears, creases and marks. The original owner has penned their name on the front endpage, along with the year "1879". There is minimal wear on the cover edges and corners.
This is such a delightful book - definitely one to add to your collection and to be cherished for many years to come.
