The Metlox Manufacturing Company was established around 1927 by Willis and T. C. Prouty in Manhattan Beach, California. The Prouty family originally sold their pottery as ProutyLine Products. The Metlox name is derived from combining parts of the words "metal" and "oxide", the substance that gives the pottery its vibrant colors.

Looking for additional ways to increase revenue during the hard times of the 30's, Metlox began producing housewares, including the Poppytrail line. Various dinnerware patterns, including California Provincial and Homestead Provincial, became extremely popular in the 60's, and maintained that popularity until the company went out of business in 1989.

This wonderful Poppytrail round covered casserole with hen lid is in the California Provincial pattern. The California Provincial pattern (#190) was first issued in 1950. The base is 7 3/4" in diameter and stands 3" high; with the lid, the casserole measures approximately 7 5/8" high to the tip of the tail feather. As seen in the pictures, both the base and the lid are in mint condition with no cracks or chips.
