A perfect sectional box for your tea bags or even for your jewelry! I received information from a customer identifying the make of this box as Najeon Chilgi artwork. Thanks to her, I have researched the method of art and am confident that the customer is right--this irregular octagon shape lacquerware box is not a jewelry box by origin but originated as a "food box". I have not been able to determine the types of food generally kept in this kind of box but certainly tea bags would work very well. The art of NAJEON CHILGI originated in ancient Korea. The craftsmanship requires comprehensive knowledge and strong skill in woodworking, metal working, and the ability of extracting the iridescent quality from abalone--making Mother of Pearl Strips--and then creating the unique eye catching designs. Marked from Korea and signed by the artist, this Asian, black lacquer box top features a centered, swirling, mother of pearl medallion inlay design. The design consists of a gnarled tree, a bird, and an antelope. Each corner is also decorated with a swirling design predominately matte gold . The sectional box measures 7.5" x 7.5" and is in wonderful condition. The box top lifts off to the four sectioned red bottom. The lacquer remains very shiny with an occasional "smudge" but no breaks, cracks or chips. Very pretty!
