Chip-carved in Black Forest style. Unique design featuring an old photo and two mirrors on the lid. "J.E. Bednarik, Wien, Weidlingau" is written on photo. In 1850, Weidlingau was merged with Hadersdorf to become what is now known as HaWei on the border of Vienna. This district houses the only surge tank in Vienna, the lock Laudon. Based on this clue, we date this box to the mid to late 19th Century. We do not have the key for the lock. Box measures 10.5" W by 7.5" D by 5.5" H approximately.
