This is an early ironstone or stoneware English syrup or molasses pitcher with a beautiful twisted "rope" handle. The lid is made of English pewter with a lovely curved leaf design and is made to overlap the pottery edge of the pitcher. The lid is fastened through the pottery and has a hinged rest with a white porcelain "button", which is in perfect condition. This shaped piece is beautifully made and has a ribbed design on the top and bottom areas of the pitcher, separated with raised gold accent bands, and a smooth center panel with a gold scrolling / vine type design going around the center of the pitcher. The rope style handle measures 4-1/2" long and has gold accents as well. There is the number "18" on the bottom - this is the only maker's mark. This antique pitcher measures 6-1/2" high and about 5" wide from spout to handle. Overall condition is excellent for this Circa 1865 piece. There are no chips; bottom has a fine crack, browned with age and piece has light staining / browning and fine crazing around bottom. Still has a lovely glaze; pewter lid and handle are in fine condition. A real antique treasure!
