As many of you know, I have quite an extensive collection of mourning jewelry, and I keep anything with unusual phrases; it's the English teacher in me, I guess. I find "Not Lost But Gone Before," among the most poignant of sentiments, and I am listing this great ring, only because I have a brooch with those words in my own collection. This lovely ring has the hair of the beloved, visible in beautiful, thick braids, and there is both black and white enamel on the front of the ring, signifying that the deceased was unmarried. The ring, a size 7 and 1/2, has a nice, thick shank (gold--18K), and it is engraved on the back "Thomas Forbes, ob 14th September, 1799 AE 18." The decorated top of the ring is fairly large, measuring 1 and 3/4 inches North to South and 1/2 inch East to West. This is a beauty, and it's in excellent condition safe for one small spot of white enamel loss over the "O." It isn't very noticeable. I am using a macro lens, so the photo here magnifies any damage.
