This is the third piece of wheat sheaf jewelry, made from human hair, I've seen.It was a Georgian theme, and I've read several possible meanings for the hair sheaf; one is that it is a fertility symbol, and might have been given to a bride from her husband's family, etc. It makes sense that a wheat sheaf would be a symbol of fertility, and I have also read that it is a sign of abundance, but when there is a piece falling off, it is a symbol for loss and mourning. At any rate, this ring is a wonderful piece of history. The wheat sheaf is formed from human hair, and tied with a gold, 3 d band. This is place on a Mother-of-Pearl background. The shank is gold, though I'm not certain of the weight. The ring is a size 5 and 3/4 to 6, though it could be sized by a jeweler who is used to working with antique jewelry. The oval piece of the ring, containing the hair sheaf, measures 1 and 3/4 inches North to South, and 3/8 of an inch East to West. This circa 1800 ring is in excellent condition.
