Georgian Mourning Jewelry, Memorial Jewelry, "Not Lost But Gone Before" Ring

$1,200 USDGeorgian Mourning Jewelry, Memorial Jewelry, "Not Lost But Gone Before" Ring

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Mourning
As many of you know, I have quite an extensive collection of mourning jewelry, and I keep anything with unusual phrases; it's the English teacher in me, I guess. I find "Not Lost But Gone Before," among the most poignant of sentiments, and I am listing this great ring, only because I have a brooch with those words in my own collection. This lovely ring has the hair of the beloved, visible in beautiful, thick braids, and there is both black and white enamel on the front of the ring, signifying ...
Hair Brooch, Lyre, Gold, Victorian

$225 USDHair Brooch, Lyre, Gold, Victorian

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Hair Brooch:Lyre
This is another beautiful hair brooch which I have taken from my own collection. It's in the shape of a lyre, and once again, one puts it on by touching the gold, and not the hairwork, and this piece, crafted of either 10 or 14 carat gold, is in excellent condition. It measures 1 inch North to South, and 7/8 of an inch East to West. The piece maintain its "c" clasp, and "t" hinge, and is circa 1860.
Hair Brooch/Sepia Painting/ Georgian

$625 USDHair Brooch/Sepia Painting/ Georgian

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Mourning:Hair Brooch, Sepia Painting
This is a lovely, navette shaped brooch. The dealer from whom I bought this said she bought it as gold and tested it, and it is gold filled, or at least the back is. I think the frame is the front is most likely gold. Anyway, we have hairwork, and an ivory wafer with a lady painted in sepia. She is holding something or looking at something, though I'm not sure what it is--perhaps an urn? Anyway, the piece is in excellent condition, and it has a safety chain. It is 1 and 5/8 of an inch North to ...
Hair Cross Under Glass/Gold/Cornelia

$350 USDHair Cross Under Glass/Gold/Cornelia

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Mourning:Hair Cross, Victorian
This lovely item is a piece from my own personal collection. I bought it about fifteen years ago, before I went into business. I love it, but have kept too many. It is unusual to find a cross of hair under glass. It is gold and I think an American piece, but it's atleast 10K. The back is engraved "Cornelia" and I think the piece is circa 1860. It measures 1 and 1/2 " long, and 1 and 1/4 inches wide. It is in excellent condition,
Hair Brooch, Victorian, Gold fittings

$175 USDHair Brooch, Victorian, Gold fittings

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Victorian Hair Brooch
This is a very nice hair brooch which I have taken out of my own collection. It was among the first I purchased and I have enjoyed it for many years, but now have more than I can wear. This one is interesting because the hair around the glass locket is blonde, but the hair inside the locket is dark. This is probably the hair of a married or engaged couple. The fittings on the side are gold, though I'm not sure of the weight, but they allow one to put the brooch on while holding the fitting so as ...
Hair Bracelet, Gold fittings, Victorian

$225 USDHair Bracelet, Gold fittings, Victorian

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Mourning:Hair Bracelet, Victorian
This is another of the pieces I am offering for sale from my own collection. It's a lovely, three strand hair bracelet, with gold (10 or 15 carat) fittings and clasp. The bracelet, circa 1860, is in excellent condition. It measures 6 and 1/4 inches long (not counting one end of the clasp), and 1/4 inches wide. There are initials on the clasp which I think are :"TBC", but it could possibly be "FBC." This is a wonderful example of jewelry crafted from hair.
Hair Ring, Georgian

$550 USDHair Ring, Georgian

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Mourning:Georgian Hair Ring
This is a very nice, gold (though I don't know the weight) mourning ring, with hair under a bezel. It's hard to see because of the glass, but the hair is dark and nicely woven. The chasing around the glass is very typical of this period. The curved shank is also lovely, and this ring is a little unusual because of the engraving all the way around the inside of the shank, and the back of the bezel. The center back has the name of the deceased, "Mary Ruddle." All around the shank are the words, ...
Memorial, Mourning Pendant, Victorian

$350 USDMemorial, Mourning Pendant, Victorian

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Mourning:Pendant, With Black Enamel, Victorian
This is a very nice piece which, at one time, was a brooch, and some later ancestor, most likely, has converted it into a pendant. It actually makes a very nice pendant. It is gold, but I'm not sure of the weight--9 carat or better. It may well be 18 carat. It has beautiful enamel work on the front with a period photo. A photo of a loved one could be placed over this one. There is a glass cover. I suspect that, when the piece was a brooch , there was hair here, as it would have been facing the ...
Mourning Cameo, Brooch/Pendant, Black Enamel

$825 USDMourning Cameo, Brooch/Pendant, Black Enamel

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Mourning:Mourning Cameo, 18 Carat, Hairwork, Victorian
This is a lovely and unusual mourning piece, because you have the hard stone cameo, set inside the black and 18 carat gold enamel. This piece is circa 1860, and in excellent condition. The cameo contains the urn and the weeping willow, and then the black and gold enamel is designed in a beautiful scrolled pattern. There is a ring, so that the piece may be worn as a pendant, and there is the original "T" hinge and "c" clasp brooch back. One of the nicest aspects of this piece I think, is the ...
Mourning Jewelry, Sepia Miniature Brooch, Dog, Georgian

$1,400 USDMourning Jewelry, Sepia Miniature Brooch, Dog, Georgian

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Mourning:Sepia Miniature Brooch, Lady With Dog, Georgian
This is a lovely gold (not sure of the weight) brooch which features a sepia miniature on ivory of a Georgian lady, with the dog at her feet. I think this one is a mourning piece, because the dog symbolizes fidelity. The weeping willow, with ground hair, is overhead, and the lady looks quite pensive. The brooch is in excellent condition, navette shaped, measuring 1 inch and 1/4 inch North to South, and 5/8 of an inch, East to West. The back of the brooch still retains its "c" clasp and "t" hinge ...
Memorial, Mourning Portrait Miniature on Jet, Victorian

$225 USDMemorial, Mourning Portrait Miniature on Jet, Victorian

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Mourning:Portrait Miniature On Jet, Brooch
This is a lovely brooch, with a portrait miniature painted on jet. The piece still has the original "c' clasp, and "t" hinge, and it measures 3 and 1/4 inches East to West, and 2 and 1/4 inches North to South. The brooch is circa 1860, and is in very good condition. There are a few scratches on the jet, not the portrait, which show in the photo. Remember, I am using a macro lens, though, so the scratches show up more in the picture than they would to the naked eye.
In Memory Of Locket, Photo, Victorian

$150 USDIn Memory Of Locket, Photo, Victorian

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Mourning:"In Memory Of" Locket, Victorian
This is a very nice locket, circa 1870, that I sort of found hiding in the bottom of my stock. It is gold toned and what the English always refer to as "pinch," or pinchbeck--that metal that wears and looks like gold, but isn't. It could actually be brass; at any rate, is in in very good shape, and a lovely piece. It has a large, enamel buckle with the words, in gold, "In Memory of." The locket opens to a place for a photo, and there is , in fact, a vintage photo inside. There is glass on either ...
Memorial Ring, Sepia Painting on Ivory, Black Enamel, Georgian

$2,000 USDMemorial Ring, Sepia Painting on Ivory, Black Enamel, Georgian

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Mourning:Sepia Painting, Black Enamel, Hair Pocket, 1780
This is a great memorial/mourning ring which has it all. First we have a sepia painting, in great condition, of a Georgian lady, standing by the tomb with the urn on top. There is a black enamel surround in great condition, which reads: "Hanh (Hannah) Leonard, ob 24 Feb, 1780, AE 55." Besides the fact that we have the black enamel in great condition, there is also a hair pocket on the back of the ring with great hairwork, surrounded by lovely, gold chasing. I haven't seen any of the sepia's with ...
Mourning Miniature, Sepia on Ivory, Georgian, Lady With Dog

$975 USDMourning Miniature, Sepia on Ivory, Georgian, Lady With Dog

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Mourning:Sepia Painting On Ivory, Georgian
This is one of my favorite mourning pieces, which were very hard to find on this last trip (12, 2005). This navette shaped piece is set in silver, with a ring and a clasp, so that the piece could be worn as a pendant or a brooch. The sepia painting on ivory is very clear and crisp with no paint loss. Here we have the lady in Georgian dress, leaning against the tomb. There is a basket of flowers on the tomb, and a dog, symbolizing fidelity, at the foot. This circa 1790's piece is in excellent ...
Mourning Jewelry, Memorial Jewelry, Georgian Ring/ Wheat Sheaf

$1,850 USDMourning Jewelry, Memorial Jewelry, Georgian Ring/ Wheat Sheaf

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Mourning:Wheat Sheaf Ring/ Human Hair, Georgian
This is the third piece of wheat sheaf jewelry, made from human hair, I've seen.It was a Georgian theme, and I've read several possible meanings for the hair sheaf; one is that it is a fertility symbol, and might have been given to a bride from her husband's family, etc. It makes sense that a wheat sheaf would be a symbol of fertility, and I have also read that it is a sign of abundance, but when there is a piece falling off, it is a symbol for loss and mourning. At any rate, this ring is a ...
Mourning Jewelry , Georgian Memorial, Ring, Sepia on Ivory,1782

$1,525 USDMourning Jewelry , Georgian Memorial, Ring, Sepia on Ivory,1782

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Mourning
This is one of the wonderful sepia miniatures on ivory, memorial rings. This one is a little different, because it has what appears to be strands of hair in the portrait, with shiny elements. The miniature is navette shaped, under a glass bezel, in a 9 ct or better setting. The top of the ring is 7/8 of an inch North to South, and 1/2 an inch East to West. The portrait consists of a lady in Georgian dress, kneeling in front of an urn The urn has a sort of 3d aspect with a gold band across the ...
Mourning Jewelry, Memorial Jewelry, Locket, 18 k, In Memoriam, Victorian

$950 USDMourning Jewelry, Memorial Jewelry, Locket, 18 k, In Memoriam, Victorian

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Mourning:18 K "In Memoriam" Locket, Enamel, Locket
This is one of the nicest of this type of locket I have seen. It's 18 k, with beautiful black and white enamel work on the front. The back side is also beautifully chased with a flat place where the piece could be engraved. This locket is in excellent condition, and the words "In Memoriam" are tooled in gold on the front. The piece opens with places for two photos under glass. This piece is circa 1860 and while "In Memory Of" lockets were fairly common at this time, they are usually smaller, 9 K ...
Mourning Miniature, Sepia angel and child on Brooch, Georgian, Pearl Surround

$1,500 USDMourning Miniature, Sepia angel and child on Brooch, Georgian, Pearl Surround

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Mourning:Sepia Miniature Of Child Being Taken To Heaven By Angel
I love the motif on this one--the angel is carrying the child to heaven, and the initials, "MB" are written at the bottom. This is a sepia painting on Ivory, circa 1790. It is in a brooch setting, with a bale, and all pins, clasps, etc appear original. The piece is gold, but I haven't tested it to determine the weight. It is navette shaped, and large, measuring 2 inches North to South, and 1 inch and 1/4 East to West. It has a lovely natural pearl surround, As most of you know, the pearls ...
Memorial Jewelry, Mourning Jewelry, Georgian Ring, Rose Cut Diamonds, Enamel band

$2,000 USDMemorial Jewelry, Mourning Jewelry, Georgian Ring, Rose Cut Diamonds, Enamel band

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Mourning:Enameled Ring, Georgian, Rose Cut Diamonds, Enameled Band
This is one of the most unique memorial rings that I have ever seen, and I would love to keep it for my own collection. Alas, I spent a lot of money on my last buying trip, and need to recoup! The top of this ring has what looks to me like a fleur-de-lis shape, with six rose cut diamonds. This sits on a bed of black enamel, and the shank is also enameled. I have never seen one with this type of top and the enameled band before. The enamel on the band is in very good condition, and reads " Allen ...
Mourning Jewelry, Memorial, Forget-Me-Not Brooch, Agate Cameo, Pearls, Victorian

$850 USDMourning Jewelry, Memorial, Forget-Me-Not Brooch, Agate Cameo, Pearls, Victorian

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Mourning:Forget-me-not Brooch, Enamel, Pearls, Hairwork, Victorian
I've had several of these black enamel memorial brooches, but this is one of the nicest I've ever seen. It's shape is different, and in the middle of the black enamel, there is an agate cameo, complete with forget-me-nots on the top. This lovely cameo is surrounded with natural pearls, and the entire piece has a heavy, gold, scrolled border, which is most likely 15 to 18 ct. The back of the piece features beautiful hairwork beautifully fashioned in a thick curl, with adorning pearls. The brooch ...
Mourning Jewelry/Memorial Jewelry/ Memorial Brooch In Presentation Case, Victorian

$425 USDMourning Jewelry/Memorial Jewelry/ Memorial Brooch In Presentation Case, Victorian

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Mourning:Hair Brooch, Victorian, In Presentation Case
This is a very nice mourning brooch--gold and enamel, with hair, but what makes it very special to me is the wonderful, red velvet presentation case, with the brooch encased in glass. Then there is the hand written note describing how the brooch contains the hair of two children, and it was presented to their mother, "Great Grandmother Huston," circa 1830. The case measures 3 and 1/2 inches North to South, and 3 inches East to West. The case and brooch are in excellent condtion. The brooch is ...
Jet Cameo Locket

$250 USDJet Cameo Locket

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Mourning:Jet Locket With Cameo
This is a lovely little jet locket. It has a cameo on the front that is pink (angelskin?) and a nice place on the back, covered with glass, for the picture of a loved one, The material on the back is solid blue; the glare from the sun in the photo makes it look spotty, but it isn't, and forgive my shadow in the jet. The piece is circa 1890, and in excellent condition. It measures 2 inches long, counting jet bale, and 1 inch and 1/4 wide.
9 Carat, "In Memory of' Locket, Memorial, Victorian

$180 USD9 Carat, "In Memory of' Locket, Memorial, Victorian

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Mourning:9 Carat Locket, "In Memory Of"
This is a pretty, unmarked, but tested, 9 carat gold locket. It has a black enamel, buckle motif, with the words, "In Memory of" written in gold. The back of the locket is very nice, also, with a shield in the center with the initials, "MDW' and "MSW." Inside is a nice glass bezel where a picture could be kept. Actually, one could be placed on the other side, too, but it would not be under glass. The hinge works well, closes tight, and the piece is circa 1860-70. It measures 1 and 1/4 inches, ...
Sepia Memorial Miniature Ring, Enameled Shank, 1777

$1,700 USDSepia Memorial Miniature Ring, Enameled Shank, 1777

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Georgian Sepia Memorial Miniature, Enameled Shank, 1777
This is a beautiful memorial sepia miniature painted on ivory. It features an urn, with the drooping weeping willow, fashioned from the hair of the deceased. On the urn are the initials "I B," or that's what it appears to be but in light of the fact that the deceased name is John, I would imagine the initials are to be "J B." The enameled shank is in perfect condition which is amazing for its two hundred plus years. It reads "John Bispham, ob 19th of Dec, 1777 aet 74. This ring is a small size; ...
Onyx Locket, Flowers, Victorian

$650 USDOnyx Locket, Flowers, Victorian

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Mourning:Onyx Locket, Flowers With Turquoise And Pearls
This is a very nice onyx locket. The trim is gold, though I'm not certain of the weight. The front is decorated with a bouquet of flowers with three gold blooms, and leaves, adorned with turquoise and natural pearls, The flowers appear as if they are being clutched, downward, in the hand. This is intentional. i have seen other pieces like this, as though the grieving person is clutching the flowers, ready to toss them in the grave. The back has glass and is hinged, and the picture of a loved one ...
Mourning Jewelry, Memorial Jewelry, White Enamel Band, Georgian

$950 USDMourning Jewelry, Memorial Jewelry, White Enamel Band, Georgian

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Mourning:White Enamel Band, 1795
This is a beautiful, white enamel (most likely signifying an unmarried person), and the enamel is in very good shape for its age. The ring is a size 8 and 1/4 to 8 and 1/2. The gold letters on the white enamel read "Ann Morse Died 22nd of May 1795 aged 85." That was quite an old age for that period of time! This ring still retains its hallmarks, including that of the King's Head. I won't stick this band in acid to test it, but I am sure that it is 18 ct.
Mourning Jewelry, Memorial Jewelry, Ring, White Enamel, Crystal, Georgian

$1,600 USDMourning Jewelry, Memorial Jewelry, Ring, White Enamel, Crystal, Georgian

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Mourning:White Enamel Band With Crystal, 1730
This is a lovely, early memorial ring with white enamel, signifying that the young woman remembered was not married. This is one of the nicest bands I've seen, because it also has a very nice diamond shaped crystal, and the links are bone shaped. The crystal has a basket back setting, and the enamel is in very good shape for its nearly 300 years. The ring is a size 6 to 6 and 1/4, and the band is quite narrow, and would look nice alone, or stacked with other bands of the same period, The band ...
Memorial Jewelry, Mourning Jewelry, Georgian Ring, Sepia Painting on Ivory

$1,850 USDMemorial Jewelry, Mourning Jewelry, Georgian Ring, Sepia Painting on Ivory

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Mourning:Georgian Memorial Ring, Sepia Panting On Ivory
This is one of my favorite sepia memorial paintings on ivory . This one has everything; it has a crisp painting with the lady, the plinth, and the weeping willow. The painting is set in a navette setting, and it has the nicely chased shoulders that one often finds on the shank of such rings. I acid tested the gold, and it tests 16 ct; it was probably meant to be 18 ct, but they did not have a precise digital tester back then like I have! The ring is a size 8 and 3/4, though it could be sized by ...
9 ct snake fichu (lace) snake brooch With Hair, Georgian (Mourning?)

$325 USD9 ct snake fichu (lace) snake brooch With Hair, Georgian (Mourning?)

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Mourning:Lace Pin, Snake, Hair, 9 Ct, Georgian
This is a lovely lace brooch (fichu) crafted of 9 carat gold (unmarked but tested). Inside the bezel is a wonderful, thick, braid of human hair, and the gold surround is that of a snake with its tail in its mouth, symbolizing eternal life. This brooch measures 1 inch East to West, and 3/4 of an inch North to South. The back has the original "c" clasp and "t" hinge, and there is also a ring, so that the piece could be worn as a pendant. This piece, circa 1810, is in excellent condition. This may ...
Georgian Memorial Ring, Souvenir, Hair

$1,050 USDGeorgian Memorial Ring, Souvenir, Hair

Jewelry:Antique:Memorial:Georgian Hair Ring, "Souvenir"
This is a classic ring that I couldn't resist. It's a navette shaped hair ring which has, on top of the hair, one ivory banner which reads "Souvenir" (memory), and another with the scribe, "ABS." This ring measures 1 and 1/4 inches North to South, and 6/8 of an inch East to West. One of the nicest features of this piece is its beautiful pearl surround. They are natural pearls, and all appear to be original. The pearls symbolized tears. This ring is a size 6 and 1/2 to 7, but it could be sized. ...
