Cast Brass Expanding Fireplace Screen

This example might be found listed as an antique and suggested to have 'patina' because it may have actually been used for its intended purpose at some point. But this item is available for purchase today through sources that offer fireplace accessories. Similar examples can easily be purchased new either retail or wholesale.

The central relief detail appears to be that of a woman holding an orb. Two Dragons face each other on the handle. The base is decorated with scroll designs and a figural face on each side. It has a distinctive non-western look, overall, which is indicitive of country of manufacture.

On the closeup image of the handle, note the excess metal or 'flash' visible inside the scrolls and the lack of fine, crisp detail in the casting. The presence of modern screws and the use of modern metal working tools to create the fan sections identify this piece as being of recent manufacture.
