This is a very heavy piece with a thick body and somewhat muted details. Unlike authentic antique majolica made by such well known companies as George Jones and Sons, Minton & Co. and Joseph Holdcroft which are substantial, but fairly thinly potted for their size and which have crisp detail and well managed glaze applications, this piece is of much lower quality.
Note that the reverse image of the exterior design elements can be seen on the interior. This is an indication the piece was slip cast, not pressed into a mold. Pay attention also to the thick runs in the glaze colors, the limited color palette and the heavy pooling of glaze on the base. The haphazard glazing on the base and a foot rim which is completely unglazed, and very wide, is also a sign of poor quality and hasty contemporary factory production.
Several authentic majolica pieces of note, such as cheese keepers, pitchers, plates, compotes and large decorative bowls have been copied by some unscrupulous manufacturers today. So always be sure to examine pieces carefully and consider the price at which they are being offered. Often a very low price can indicate the seller knows that the item is not authentic. It is a good idea to try to familiarize yourself with the look and feel of authentic pieces of majolica in order to more surely recognize the new pieces when they cross your path.
This piece measures 23 inches across at the top, 6 1/2 inches wide at the top, is 12 inches tall in the center and 13 1/2 inches tall on the ends.
