SOLD [Abraham Lincoln] William Seward, Secretary of State
William Henry Seward (1801-1872) was a U.S. Senator, Governor of New York and United States Secretary of State under Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. He was a dominant figure in the Republican Party during its formative years and an outspoken opponent of slavery leading up to the Civil War. He became a loyal member of Lincoln’s wartime cabinet and played a role in preventing foreign intervention early in the war. He survived an attempt on his life on the night of Lincoln’s assassination. As secretary of state, he engineered the purchase of Alaska from Russia. He was ridiculed for this at the time.
Offered here is a very fine autograph with the word “Auburn” and dated Nov. 18, 1858. Mounting residue on verso. Light stain on left corner affecting nothing. Very good condition.
